Did everyone catch the news the major internet news from today? If you missed it you can read the whole article here.
However, the main idea is that the internet regulators have officially decided to open up domain name extensions. This means that instead of having the general .com, .ca, .org, etc… they’ll be less restrictive. This means that large companies, like Google, Apple, Walmart, etc. can buy their own domain extensions. So in this case it could be .goog, .mac (or .aapl), .wmt, etc…
Although, this doesn’t seem like large news to some, I see it as a significant move.
- Companies will be able to market themselves better or more trusted. Would you not trust a website that was ipodtouch.mac? or ipodtouch.ipod? Right now it doesn’t look ‘trust-worthy’, however, in 5 years it will.
- Search engines will incorporate this into their engines. It’ll be much easier for them to determine ‘trustworthy’ domains.
- Domaining (the market of buying and selling domains or websites) just got a lot bigger. You imagine buying the extension, .etc or .why or .buy? You could setup a zillion webpages under these names and if they were significant then search engines might rank you better based on the extension.
Anyway, it’s quite interesting news when more domain extensions are opened up. It’ll be neat to see what happens with these extensions within the next year.
