Thursday night I attended the Cake concert here in Calgary. It was a pretty good concert with lots of crowd interaction. Everyone was slightly disappointed that they didn’t play a couple of their more popular songs especially those from Fashion Nugget.

At about the half-way part of the show they stopped the concert and gave away a tree. Yes, a tree! Actually an apple tree! They said that whoever gets it must plant it, care for it and take pictures of themselves by it for years to come.  The pictures will be posted onto the Cake Website.

How brilliant is this marketing? An apple tree probably costs around $50-75.  For this money they’ll have advertising from whoever gets the tree for life!  Anytime someone asks about the tree they’ll be told about the band Cake.  The person will take pictures around the tree, tell friends about the tree, post links to his pictures of the tree, etc…   Brilliant.

Here is a picture of the apple tree from a show in Seattle.

This is just another example of thinking outside of the box. To really set yourself apart or get noticed you need to think outside of the box.

What can you do in your niche that will differentiate you from your competitors?
