I’m just finished watching the Calgary Flames play the San Jose Sharks and it inspired me to write this post. Just watching these guys battle and never give up. They’re always going hard, making plays before getting hit and doing what’s best for the team. This made me think, can we learn anything from hockey and apply it to blogging? Here’s my top five things to learn from hockey and apply it to blogging.
Defense is the key to success![]()
Defense in hockey is the equivalent to content in blogging. The better your content the better your blog. Again, like hockey it doesn’t matter what type of defense (or content) just that the content be good. If you have bad defense or content you’ll lose lots of games or have no visitors. Once the Calgary Flames were able to secure a good goaltender then they were able to win some games. If you create quality content you’ll win some games too.
Hardwork in the corners will get you a scoring chance
The cycle in hockey happens behind the net in the corners and from the unskilled eye this looks like it doesn’t have a significant impact on the game. Similarly, backlinks happen behind the scene and aren’t obvious to the normal blog reader. However, like the cycle in hockey you must be willing to fight in the corners if you want to win. You won’t get immediate exposure doing backlink buildling. However, overtime you’ll break your opponent (Google, Yahoo, etcc.) down and start moving up the search engine ranks.
You’ll never score if you don’t shoot
This is similar to building traffic to your website. Traffic is your shot on the internet; without shooting (traffic) you’ll never score (make money), guaranteed. How do you get traffic? Through good defense (Content) and hardwork (backlinks).
Having a good defense in hockey gets you turnovers, which can result in a shot on net and thus a scoring chance. Likewise, having good content will get you noticed by others on the internet and your site is much more likely to go viral. Secondly, putting hardwork into collecting backlinks helps you get ranked in Google and referral traffic.
If you get a breakaway make the best of it
In hockey, breakaways don’t happen very often, so when a breakaway happens the player tries to make the best of them. In blogging for money you will be able to score (make money) but you won’t always get a breakaway (cash-cow) but if you do you must make the most of it. To increase your chances of landing a breakaway you must track everything! You need to track where and how you’re making money. How and where your traffic is coming from. How many and how often you have RSS readers. (I’ll discuss all these topics in future blogs).
Never Quit
It’s guaranteed you won’t win a Stanley Cup the first time you play a game of hockey. Similarly, you can’t expect to be a big time blogger after you make your first blog post. Again, like hockey, if you preserve and never give up you’ll make money.
You must do Whatever It Takes to get your blog making money. This means playing defense, working in the corners, shooting the puck and capitalizing on your opportunities.
