This post is a basic overview of the Search Engine Algorithm’s that are used on the internet. Obviously, they are very different between MSN, Google, Ask, etc.. However, the basic principles can all be applied to all the search engines.
Google has something called a Page Rank to rank sites based on importance. It’s debatable how significant the page rank is in terms of search result positioning. However, the key point of the algorithm demonstrates an important point of all search engine functions.
The page rank algorithm is all about backlinks. Basically, if you have 100 sites pointing at one site then this site is deemed important. Now if that same site links elsewhere then that other site is now deemed important. The figure below from wikipedia clearly demonstrates this process. As we can see website B is important but because B links to C then C is also deemed important. For this reason it’s great to get backlinks from sites that are deemed important. You can check a page’s pagerank with a number of different pagerank checkers. I usually use PRChecker.

Don’t get too caught up in the whole algorithm as the page rank doesn’t seem to have a large effect on the actual ranking in the search engine. I have a website that has a page rank of zero but is well ranked for almost every keyword I’m trying to get in google. This demonstrates that page rank, although important, might not be as applicable as previously thought.
The key is just knowing that getting backlinks is SUPER important. The search engines are saying that sites that get linked to often are considered important or an authority site. It’s also sometimes mentioned that limiting the number of ‘outgoing’ links (links from your website) should be limited. As you can see backlinks are important to search engines and being ranked well in the search engines. My next article will describe the various methods of getting these backlinks to your site.
