One of the next things that you should do is setup all your tracking software. You might have found it already, however, when you installed all the plugins there was two stats plugins. I’ll start by describing those then I’ll get to your ‘real’ stats tracker.
The first stats tracker is Wordpress.com Stats. This plugin is great because it’s easily accessible and doesn’t track you going to your own page. It also tells you where the person came from (referrer) and what links the person clicked. However, this plugin doesn’t have quite the complexity that you’ll eventually need.
The second visitor tracker is WP SlimStat. This plugin is also easily accessible and tells you details of where the visitor came from. I like this plugin because when some reaches your through google you can click on that word, under Recent Search String. This will bring you to the exact search query that they used. This shows you where you stand in the list, what page of the list and who your competitors are. Very Handy!
The final stats tracker you need is Google Analytics. This is by far the best free stats tracker on the internet. Sign-up and enter your site information. You’ll then be given a piece of tracking code. You’ll need to go to your Presentation -> Theme Editor and go to your Footer. Copy and paste this code directly above the </body> code.
Now your Google Analytics should be setup. It’ll take a little while to gather stats especially if you’re just starting out. In the future I’ll discuss how to actually analyze these stats to help you make better and more targeted posts.
