The next step in setting up your blog making money is to start adding some sort of advertisement. Let’s start with Google Adsense
Google Adsense Ads are called Contextual Ads because they adapt to the content on the site. So, if your content is all about Widgets then the ads will be related to widgets. This is a good thing for us because when the ads are target towards the content on your site you should have more people clicking the links. In the words of Borat, Nice!
One key note is that when setting up google ads (or any ads for that matter) is that you should know which ads are actually being clicked. Obviously, if you know that a certain type of ad is being clicked then you should add more of that type. However, if you don’t know which ads are being clicked then you’ll never how to optimize.
So, how do you go about setting up adsense ads?
Go to Google Adsense and sign-up for an account. It’ll take about 2 days or so to be approved for an account.
Now, that you’ve been approved you can start creating ads for your site. Now when you’re setting up ads you’ll click on Adsense Setup and you’ll end up with a screen below.
You’ll have three different options Adsense for Content, adsense for Search and adsense referrals. We’ll be using Adsense for Content in this post as it’ll probably be your highest paying option.
Under Content ads you’ll have two more options, Ad Unit or Link Unit. An Add Unit are those ads which have some text with the ad. Where as the link units only have single words. Both options can work for your site and really depends on your theme template. You can see all the different ad size options at google adsense formats.
Let’s assume that you’ll be setting up an Ad Unit so select that option. On the next screen you’ll have two important settings the ad format and the color. The format is whichever format you want for your site. I personally like the Banner (468 x 60) and the Square (250 X 250).
Second, you’ll want to set the color of the links to be as similar to your websites text as possible. This will make the ads blend with the text a bit more and you should get more clicks.
On the next page you’ll have a chance to setup an Ad Channel. This ad channel is used to track exactly how many clicks that specific ad is getting. Setup a new ad channel and make sure that you remember what and where you’re putting this specific ad. Maybe using a word that will remind you where you put it will be helpful.
For wordpress blogs I like to create an ad format and channel for every adsense unit that’s going on single posts. On other pages I’ll setup another ad unit and ad channel. Now on the next two pages you’ll get the ad code. You can go ahead and paste this code on your site. However, in the next article I’ll explain an easier way to do add this code to your site.
Note: be sure to never click your own ads even if your super curious of where the ad is going. Your account could and might be terminated if you do this.
