Here are the wordpress plugins that you need to install for wordpress. Sure, you can run Wordpress and your blog without them, but these will help you get more traffic, find out where your traffic is coming from and keep your traffic on your page. There are definitely more plugins that you could install for the blog and we’ll talk about additional ones in due time but for now just install these ones.
- The first plugin I install is the wordpress-plugin-uploader. This plugin makes uploading the rest and any other plugins much easier. So, I’ll explain how to upload this plugin. For the rest of the plugins you can follow these steps or use the plugin uploader tool.
- Once you download the plugin go ahead and unzip it.
- Using that WinSCP program that we discussed in the wordpress template post move all the folder to your folder named public_html/EXAMPLE/wp-content/plugins/.
- Now click on your plugins bar and you’ll see a new plugin in your list.
- Activate it.
That’s it now the plugin is activated. You should now see a new link in your plugins bar, it’s in the yellow box in the image below.
You can now use the plugin uploader tool to upload the rest of your plugins (or follow those steps again). To use the tool simply select the zip file of your plugin and click upload. You then just have to Activate it.
So here are the rest of the plugins that I almost always include in my wordpress installation.
- Adsense-Deluxe
- Helps makes your adsense ads a little easier to place on your blog
- Akismet
- Protects your comments from SPAM
- All In One SEO Pack
- This is a search engine optimizer plugin so this helps you get indexed in search engines better or faster.
- Better Comments Manager
- Helps you manage your comments easier
- Flexible Upload
- Makes uploading pictures a little easier
- Google XML Sitemaps
- Creates a sitemap of your blog to help the search engines go through your site
- Show Top Commentators
- A good plugin to help get repeat visitors to your site
- Simple Tags
- Helps you to ‘tag’ your posts which I’ll discuss more later.
- Wordpress.com Stats
- Keeps stats of your traffic
- Wordpress Video Plugin
- Makes placing youtube videos on your site easier
- WP Contact Form
- You can place a contact-form on your website to make it easier for people to contact you. Similar to the one here.
- WP SlimStat (you need to move the .php file that you download to the plugins directory as the uploader plugin doesn’t work)
- A plugin to see where your traffic is coming from
Now go activate those plugins and surf around your Options menu and see what you’ve installed.
