After you’ve installed wordpress onto your host the next step is to select a template. This step is really easy but usually takes a bit of time, mostly because there are so many neat templates to choose from.
Login to your wordpress blog.
When you setup your wordpress installation you should have received an email that explained how to login. If not it’s simply EXAMPLE.com/wp-admin. Take a little while to navigate all around this interface. You’ll be using it a LOT in the next year or so. Once you’re done go to Presentation.
At the bottom of this screen there will be a link that says Wordpress theme directory. You can simply click on that link and you’ll see a bunch of different options to choose from (or you can get to it from here).
Find a template or two you like and download it. I like to choose a couple templates because then I can change my theme if it didn’t turn out how I thought it would.
Now unzip it on your computer. Then login to your host using an FTP server. I like WinSCP as it’s pretty easy to use and takes no time at all to install. You’ll need your Host Name (EXAMPLE.com), UserName, Password and Port Number (22).
Now move the directory of the template from your computer to /public_html/EXAMPLE/wp-content/themes
There really is no way around doing this step. You’ll need to do again in the next article where we load plugins onto your wordpress installation. Again, if you have problems with this step them contact me.
