After selecting a Niche the next step is to select a domain name. A domain name shouldn’t cost you more then $10 and should be around $5 - $10. At www.GoDaddy.com you can get domains for $9.95. If you’re buying a .ca or some other country domain then expect to pay a little more but shouldn’t be more then $15.
When selecting a domain name you should take a couple of things into consideration.
1) It should be easy to remember
Once you establish a reader base you’ll often get people returning using only the URL. So if you make the domain name something difficult to remember then you’re going to be losing a lot of traffic.
2) It shouldn’t be too long
Again, this is because of people going directly to your blog.
3) Try to avoid plurals
Plurals are those websites that have an ’s’ on the end. Obviously, some cases where an ’s’ on the end is acceptable. However, for the most part adding an ’s’ makes your domain less memorable or worse you’ll lose a reader to the person with an ’s’
Besides those three things the skys the limit. If you are registering at www.GoDaddy.com they’ll give you some suggestions if your domain isn’t available.
Here are some places that I’ve heard good things about or have registered at before:
- Moniker.com
- Dotster.com
- Namespro.ca (For Canadian extensions)
I’ll provide a review of all these places in due time but for now just pick one and register a domain. If you’re wondering about whether you should get a .com, .net, .org, etc… read this article.
